Does my iPhone or Apple Watch support car keys in Apple Wallet?

In addition to a supported car in a supported region, you need:

  • (For passive entry) iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 17e), or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later.
  • (For NFC tap entry) iPhone XS or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation), or Apple Watch Series 5 or later, or Apple Watch SE.
  • The latest version of iOS or watchOS.
  • To be signed into your device with your Apple Account.
 How do I set up my car key in Apple Wallet?

You can start the setup process in a few different ways:

  • Your automaker's app.
  • The email or text message from your automaker, sent when you register your account in your automaker's app. You can also find the passcode to use, if your car's setup process requires it.
  • The digital key section in your car's infotainment system.

 How do I use my car key in Apple Wallet?

For hands-free unlocking, just keep your iPhone in your pocket or bag, or wear your Apple Watch. Depending on your car, it will unlock as you walk up to it or when you grab the door handle.

For tap to unlock, hold the top of your iPhone or your Apple Watch face near the car's door handle.

 My car has a digital key feature. How do I know it will work within Apple Wallet?
Look for the "Add to Apple Wallet" button. Car key in Apple Wallet is built on NFC and Ultra Wideband for more secure, more precise car access. It works without needing to wake your phone, and lives right in the Wallet app alongside your other cards and passes. It's easy to use, easy to share, and private by design.
How secure are car keys in Apple Wallet?
Your car keys are protected by the same security features that keep your Apple devices safe. You can instantly disable your car key if your device is lost or stolen, and securely share keys using Face ID and one-time activation codes.

  1. Compatible car required. To use car keys on Wallet, you must be within Bluetooth range and need iPhone 11 or later (excluding iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation and iPhone 16e) or an Apple Watch Series 5 or later. See here for more details about car key.
  2. Most car key features will not be available in power reserve mode; power reserve mode only allows you to lock and unlock your car and start/drive. Depending on your vehicle, unlocking requires either holding your iPhone near the key reader or pressing the side button once.
  3. Please contact your car manufacturer or dealership to confirm if your car is eligible for car key in Apple Wallet. Feature availability may differ by regions, models, and trims.
